A former hotel manager has been licensed as the new Team Vicar for Cowbridge.
The Revd Victoria Ashley was licensed in a special service at Holy Cross Church, Cowbridge, by the Bishop of Llandaff, June Osborne. She takes over from the Revd Edward Owen who left earlier this year after four years in post.
Victoria moves to Llandaff Diocese from Monmouth where she was Ministry Area Leader designate and priest-in-charge of Cwmbran benefice.
A career change away from hotel management in her late 40s meant Victoria was able to attend church more regularly and as her involvement in church life grew, her calling for ordination grew.
She was ordained deacon in 2008 and priest the following year, serving a four-year curacy in Tredegar before becoming priest-in-charge of Pontnewydd in 2012. Following a three-year Ministry Leaders Course, Victoria was appointed Ministry Area Leader designate of Cwmbran at the start of 2016.
“I am very grateful to the Monmouth Diocese, especially as it was somewhere that I never thought I’d leave but I am hugely excited to be taking up this new position in Cowbridge as it just feels ‘right’ to be here.
“I hope that the skills that I developed as a Ministry Area Leader working within a team will transfer well into my new post of Team Vicar in this area. I hope to encourage, nurture and develop the involvement of lay people through collaborative working to utilise their gifts and talents to best effect.
“I am also looking forward to helping to nurture people’s Christian faith by accompanying them on their individual spiritual journey.”
Victoria said she was also looking forward to pastoral work with older people in the community who often found themselves isolated and lonely. She is married to Andrew Butteriss, who retired a year ago from his job as maintenance officer.
In her spare time she enjoys holidays with Andrew, some retail therapy and relaxing in the garden with a good book, weather permitting!
Bishop June said, “Victoria comes to us after considerable experience in our neighbouring diocese of Monmouth and we are thrilled to have her as part of the Llandaff family. She has a very great sense of God’s call to be in this part of the Vale of Glamorgan and will add great value to a strong team of ministers serving these diverse communities which have exquisite church buildings. As I welcome her and Andrew most warmly I know that they will soon be very much at home in their new community.”
