Home Education and Young People Resources Lamentations Lesson 2

Lesson 2

How Do We Express Sadness?

Discuss: How might someone act when feeling sad?

e.g – cry, shout, want to be alone, not want to talk, behave unkindly, not want to play with others.

Suggested activity: Look at a range of emotions using emojis. How do we recognise when someone is sad?

So what can we do about it?

It’s okay to feel sad, everyone does sometimes, but the most important thing is knowing what we can do about it.

Discuss: How can we cope with sadness? Who are your biggest supports? How can you help and support others who are sad?

  • talk to someone about it, this could be a trusted adult or a friend
  • go for a walk
  • listen to happy music
  • do something you really enjoy doing.
  • draw a picture of how you feel
  • play with a friend
  • read a book

Suggested Task:

Someone who can help is…

Something I can do is…

Something that can cheer me up…

Someone I can talk to is…

Why is it important to express how we feel?

Expressing your feelings and emotions can help you to feel better about yourself and the situation. Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and help you cope when you feel upset. It is important not just for your mental health, but for your physical health as well.

Expressing feelings can help you to feel:

  • connected
  • empowered
  • understood
  • relieved
  • heard
  • supported
  • in control
  • less emotional

Not everyone reacts the same way when they feel sad. Take a moment to think about:

  • when you were sad, how did you react?
  • did you tell someone that you were sad?
  • did someone make you feel better?
  • have you made someone feel better when they were sad? How did that make you feel?
  • have you pretended to be happy even though you are sad? Why?

Let us pray

Dear God,
Thank you that you are always there for us to talk to at any time.
Thank you for family and friends who we can turn to when we are sad.
Please help us to realise that our feelings are part of who we are.
Help us to learn how to deal with the way we feel.
Please help us to be able to laugh and be full of joy.
