A keen band of pilgrims from Roath Parish, Cardiff, started their 2020 Year of Pilgrimage celebrations early with a torch lit Advent Pilgrimage. Lee Gonzalez, chair of Roath Parish Pilgrims Group, walks us through their special prayerful event.
“As part of the Diocesan Year of Pilgrimage Roath Parish formed a pilgrimage committee to arrange pilgrimages on behalf of both congregations.
Our first pilgrimage was a spectacular torch lit prayer walk that took place on the 2nd Sunday of Advent from St Margaret’s church to St Edwards.
Over 70 people joined our pilgrimage which was themed as a celebration of God in our lives. We attracted many onlookers from nearby homes who were clearly fascinated with our walk of faith.
We began in St Margaret’s with a blessing from Rev Canon Stewart Lisk and along the route we said seven prayers thanking God for our community, our parks and sports facilities, schools and residential homes, which were written and prepared by Rev. Ruth Coombs.
Our prayer walk was followed by a magnificent choral evensong hosted by St Edwards choir.
After choral evening song each of the participants received a pilgrims passport, and refreshments were provided by the Paradise Run organisers. We finished with a sung candlelit compline.
This was a wonderful event and one that brought us out of our church buildings and into the community. It also brought us closer to God.”
This is the first of four pilgrimages that the Parish Pilgrims Group are organising.
