Love came down at Christmas,Love all lovely, Love Divine,Love was born at Christmas,Star and Angels gave the sign.Christina Rossetti’s famous poem reminds us that at the heart of Christmas lies a profound truth —the truth of God's love for humanity. As a consequence of that love, the One who laid aside his majesty came not to be served but to serve, to bring salvation and hope to all people. This incredible act of love, this divine descent into human form, is the very essence of Christmas. It is a reminder that God is not a distant, uncaring deity, but a loving Father who is intimately involved in the lives of the people of his creation.God's love is not merely a sentimental emotion; it is a transformative force that has the power to change lives. It is a love that is unconditional, everlasting and unwavering. It is a love that extends to all people, regardless of their background, beliefs, or actions. This love is not passive; it is active, seeking out those who are lost, broken, and in need. It is a love that embraces us in our imperfections, offering forgiveness, healing, and redemption. Some people might want to take issue with Ms Rossetti’s opening statement because it might seem to suggest that before the birth of Jesus God’s love wasn’t to be found in the world; surely God’s love was already here? But I don’t think that’s what she is suggesting.Rather, in the birth of the babe of Bethlehem God’s love became enfleshed, and in Christ we have visible and tangible proof of how much the world and its people mean to God, evidence of the exalted place we have in his heart. In that sense, the Incarnation was absolutely something new. Truly, love came down at Christmas. As we reflect on the immense gift of God's love, may that love guide our actions, our words, and our interactions with others. Through his grace may we reflect and refract that love, spreading kindness, compassion, and hope to those around us.
