Llangasty Retreat House was originally built as a large Victorian Rectory, enjoying spectacular views across Llangorse Lake towards the western fringe of the Black Mountains. When the Rectory became redundant it was acquired by local resident Dorothy Raikes who believed that such a glorious location should continue to serve a Christian purpose. Llangasty was re-opened as a retreat house in 1954 and has continued to flourish ever since.Fr Irving Hamer, priest at St Martin in Roath has fond memories of Llangasty. Posting on the Diocese of Llandaff Facebook Community Group, Fr Irving said, "I have known Llangasty since the early 1980’s, when as a curate in Porthcawl, we took the young people there for a pre confirmation retreat. I have visited Llangasty many times for retreat. It was then cared for by the Sisters of Charity, with the lovely Sisters Rosalie and Alice Lillian. They also had a House in Knowle in Bristol. Another member of that Community was Sister Faith known and loved by Anglican students at the Anglican Chaplaincy, Cardiff."We asked our Facebook Community Group whether they had visited Llangasty. All had something positive to say about their visit.

Glyn Austin, another member of our Facebook Community Group, commented that Llangasty is the perfect spot for birdwatching, "Pied Flycatchers in the oaks by the lake and Redstarts in the garden in summer. In the winter you can see Smew on the lake. Fabulous place."The house with its chapel overlooking the lake is Number 1 on my list of places to worship... Creation comes in to meet you if you leave the doors of the chapel open in summer. I sang Dear Lord and Father of Mankind in the chapel once and as I looked out at the lake and the mountain above the 'Syrian Sea' drew close and the 'calm of hills above' reached out and touched me. Bendigedig!!!"

Many of our churches and Christian groups, such as Mothers' Union Llandaff, organise retreats to Llangasty. It's the perfect location for a group-led retreat or to visit as an individual. If you have never been before then try one of their monthly open days. These are an opportunity for prayer and personal reflection, and you can attend for all or part of the day. Tea and coffee are provided but you will need to bring your own lunch. There's no charge but donations welcome. Open days are monthly from 10am - 4pm with Eucharist at 12 noon.
