Pilgrims from across the Diocese and beyond gathered on Saturday for a joyful celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Shrine of Our Lady of Penrhys, coming together in fellowship on a beautiful summer’s day.Although the planned pilgrimage walk had to be cancelled because of devastating woodland fires along the Llanwonno route, the spirit of the day remained undimmed as worshippers united in prayer, thanksgiving, and community.The Eucharist went ahead as planned, offering pilgrims a moment of peace and shared devotion amid the disruption caused by the fires. After the service, many stayed to enjoy picnics, conversation, and the blessing of warm, bright weather, a chance to reconnect, support one another, and celebrate the enduring strength of faith‑filled community.Penrhys holds deep significance in Welsh Christian tradition. The Shrine, long associated with devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Its hilltop location overlooking the Rhondda has drawn generations seeking prayer, healing, and spiritual renewal. Gathering there continues a cherished tradition of journeying together, even when circumstances change, to encounter God’s presence and to strengthen the bonds of fellowship.Saturday’s gathering reflected the heart of pilgrimage, not only the physical journey but the shared commitment to worship, community, and hope.
