Diocese Marks Mary Sumner Day, Celebrating 150 Years of Mothers’ Union’s Groundbreaking Ministry

Sunday marked Mary Sumner Day, a celebration honouring the visionary founder of the Mothers’ Union, a woman whose deep faith and fierce commitment to strengthening family life transformed the Anglican Communion and inspired a global movement.

Mary Sumner’s pioneering work championed women’s voices, upheld the dignity of family life, and laid foundations for practical, prayerful support that continues to shape communities across the world.

Branches across the Diocese of Llandaff joined millions of MU members worldwide in giving thanks for her legacy of prayerful advocacy, community support, and faith‑filled action.

To mark the occasion, and to celebrate 150 years of Mothers’ Union, the Provincial MU Chaplain, Rev’d Sandra Birdsall, wrote a special prayer reflecting this year’s anniversary theme: “Lighting the way for generations to come.”

At 6pm on Sunday, MU branches across the diocese lit candles in thanksgiving for the past, celebration of the present, and hope for the future. The simple act of shared light echoed Mary Sumner’s own conviction that faith, courage, and compassion can illuminate even the most challenging times.
