New Deacons Begin Their Ministry
The Diocese rejoiced this week as four new deacons were ordained in a service filled with warmth, hope, and a deep sense of calling. Stepping into a ministry rooted in service and compassion, the newly ordained embraced their vocation as heralds of the kingdom, committed to bringing before the servant Church the needs and longings of the world, echoing the vision set out in Common Worship: Ordination Services (2007).

Christopher Auckland of the Heritage Coast Ministry Area, Richard Grabham of North Cardiff, Samantha Minett of Pen‑y‑bont ar Ogwr, and Craig Williams of Roath and Cathays were presented to Bishop Mary by the Diocesan Director of Ordinands, Rev’d Canon Ian Hodges, who affirmed their readiness to serve God’s people. Representatives of St Padarn’s Institute confirmed that each had been found to be of godly life and sound learning, and that they were duly called to this ministry. When asked by the Bishop whether they believed God had called them to the office and work of a deacon, each responded with quiet conviction: “I believe that God has called me.”
The sermon was preached by Mrs Mandy Bayton, Director of Mission for the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon, who encouraged the candidates to embrace the heart of diaconal ministry with courage, tenderness, and joy. As they stood before the Bishop, the candidates were reminded of the ancient calling they were entering: to serve the Church of God; to care for the poor, the sick, the lonely, and the oppressed; to preach the word of God; to assist in leading worship; and to be diligent in pastoral care and service to the community. They were urged to remember Christ’s example in washing his disciples’ feet, and to recognise that in serving others they were serving the Lord himself.

The moment of vesting, carried out by their Training Incumbents, marked the beginning of their public ministry with quiet dignity and visible joy. Each new deacon received a New Testament as Bishop Mary entrusted them with their calling, urging them to be faithful in the ministry now placed in their hands and to serve God’s people with dedication and love. The congregation responded with warm applause as the Bishop presented the newly ordained, celebrating their commitment and the promise of their ministry.

May the God who has called Christopher, Richard, Samantha, and Craig guide their steps in the way of peace, strengthen their hands for service, and fill their hearts with the joy of Christ the Servant, now and always.
