All Creatures Great and Small
The Pet Blessing Service at St Michael’s Church, Maesteg, in the Llynfi and Upper Afan Valleys Ministry Area, was a warm and joy‑filled gathering that celebrated the deep bond between people and the animals who share their lives. The church came alive with gentle paws, soft purrs, excited barks, and the unmistakable sense of companionship that only pets can bring.
For many who attended, the service was more than a moment of blessing, it was a recognition of the love, loyalty, and quiet presence that pets offer every day. Whether they greet us at the door, curl up beside us in moments of sadness, or simply walk faithfully by our side, animals have a remarkable way of grounding us, comforting us, and reminding us of the goodness woven into creation. Their companionship is often wordless, yet profoundly healing.
A particularly moving part of the afternoon was the memory area, created to honour pets who are no longer with us. People were invited to bring photographs and place them on a dedicated table, a simple but powerful act of remembrance. As candles flickered nearby, stories were shared, tears were shed, and smiles returned as memories of beloved companions were recalled with gratitude.

This space allowed the community to acknowledge the grief that comes with losing a pet, while also celebrating the joy they brought. It was a reminder that love leaves a lasting imprint, and that God cares for all creatures, great and small.
Throughout the service, the theme of Christian stewardship shone through, the call to care for creation, to treat animals with kindness, and to recognise the sacredness of the relationships we form with them. Pets teach us gentleness, patience, and unconditional affection. They draw us into routines of care and remind us daily of the beauty of God’s world.
As Scripture affirms, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” — Proverbs 12:10
The Pet Blessing Service at St Michael’s was a tender expression of faith, community, and gratitude, a celebration of the animals who walk beside us and the God who delights in all creation.
