Alderman Davies CIW School Celebrates Outstanding Estyn Report
The Diocese is delighted to share the excellent outcome of the recent Estyn inspection at Alderman Davies Church in Wales Primary School in Neath. The report marks a moment of real celebration for the whole school community, particularly following a period that has brought its share of challenges.

Estyn, the education and training inspectorate for Wales, provides independent, in-depth evaluations of schools across the country. Its inspections are rigorous, focusing on leadership, teaching and learning, pupil wellbeing, and the overall effectiveness of a school. In this context, the praise received by Alderman Davies CIW School is both deeply encouraging and richly deserved.
The report highlights the school's nurturing environment and the strength of its leadership:
"Alderman Davies CIW School promotes a kind, supportive and nurturing environment successfully.
The headteacher provides strong leadership through clear communication and strategic direction for school improvement.
Alongside other school leaders, she fosters a strong culture of care and respect, ensuring that pupils feel safe, secure and happy at school."
It also acknowledges the school's deeply embedded Christian ethos and the positive impact of its mission on pupils’ personal development:
"Through the school’s mission statement — Empowering all through Christ’s love — pupils display values of courtesy, compassion and understanding across all areas of the curriculum and daily school life.
These attributes enable most pupils to develop as ambitious and ethical learners."
This report is a powerful endorsement of the hard work, unity, and faith-driven perseverance shown by the school community, under the leadership of headteacher Sarah Williams.
Despite recent difficulties, the staff have shown remarkable dedication to maintaining a positive, supportive, and high-quality learning environment for every child.
Clare Werrett, Head of Education for the Dioceses of Llandaff and Monmouth, said:
"What a wonderful report from Estyn which reflects the caring, supportive and inclusive Christian ethos at the school.
I would like to congratulate the whole school community on their success which is a result of strong leadership and a hardworking, dedicated team."
Bishop Mary said, “This is wonderful news for Alderman Davies School and for the Church in Wales.
The whole school community have created a school where pupils are nurtured in learning, pastoral care and faith.
The whole school’s commitment to serving one another and the wider community is a true witness to the Gospel values of perseverance, faithfulness, joy and hope.
I offer my warmest congratulations and gratitude to them all.”
This recognition marks a significant step forward not only for Alderman Davies CIW School, but also for the Diocese’s wider commitment to nurturing faith-filled, resilient, and aspirational learning communities. It is a moment of joy, gratitude, and renewed hope for the future.
