Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Archdeacon Rod to Leave Llandaff to Serve as Next Suffragan Bishop of Stepney in London

We wish to share the news that the Venerable Rod Green, Archdeacon of Llandaff, has been appointed as the next Bishop of Stepney in the Diocese of London.

This morning Downing Street made the following announcement:

“The King has approved the nomination of The Venerable Roderick (Rod) Ernest Alexander Green, BA, MA, MTh, Archdeacon of Llandaff, in the Church in Wales, to the Suffragan See of Stepney, in the Diocese of London, in succession to The Right Reverend Dr Joanne Woolway Grenfell, MA, DPhil, following her translation to the See of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

Rod was educated at the University of Reading and the London School of Theology, and trained for ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He served his title at Christ Church, Spitalfields, in the Stepney Area of the Diocese of London and was ordained priest in 2008.

In 2011 he took up the role of Associate Rector at St Paul’s, Shadwell, also in the Stepney Area of the Diocese of London. In 2014 he was appointed Vicar at St. Peter’s, West Harrow, in the Willesden Area of the Diocese of London.

He has served in his current role as Archdeacon of Llandaff, in the Diocese of Llandaff, in the Church in Wales, since 2021.”

While we are truly sorry to see Archdeacon Rod conclude his ministry here in Llandaff, we are deeply grateful for his faithful service, wise leadership, and the warmth and dedication he has brought to the life of our diocese. His presence here will be greatly missed.

At the same time, we rejoice for the people of Stepney, who will be blessed by his gifts and talents as he begins this new chapter in his ministry.

We ask for your prayers for Archdeacon Rod, his family, and the communities he will soon serve, trusting that God will continue to guide and strengthen them in the months ahead.
