Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Eucharist

‘Eucharist’ comes from the Greek word for ‘thanksgiving’. At the Eucharist the Church remembers Jesus’ last supper where he gave bread and wine to be his body and blood, a sign of his saving love. See also Holy Communion.

Churches to hold commemoration services for the Queen on Sunday

Prayers for the Queen will be said across Wales on the eve of her funeral.

Churches and Cathedrals will be holding special commemoration services on Sunday to give thanks for the Queen’s life and to pray for her and the Royal Family. The services will be open to all, with some also attended by civic dignitaries and Lord Lieutenants, representing His Majesty the King.

The services will be an opportunity for people to gather together ahead of the Queen’s funeral on Monday. They will give thanks for the Queen’s life of service and faithfulness and offer prayers for King Charles, the Royal Family and for all those grieving at this time.

The Archbishop of Wales, Andrew John, who will be attending the Queen's funeral on Monday, said, “The past week has seen thousands of people visiting our churches to pray, reflect, light a candle or sign a book of condolence. This Sunday will be an opportunity for us all to come together in sorrow and to pray for the Royal Family ahead of the funeral on Monday. I hope as many people as possible will attend and I am immensely grateful to our churches for all the work they have done to serve and support their communities at this time.”
