Cowbridge Festival of Angels
Holy Cross Church in Cowbridge is hosting a festival of Angels during Advent. The beautiful and tranquil exhibition is centred around the impressive angels devised and designed several years ago by artist Anne-Marie Kers and made with the help of fellow artists Claire Carrington, Dawn Wesselby and support from local community groups from St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham.
Helen Whyment, a member of the Holy Cross congregation, tracked the angels down - which had been stored at Sheffield Cathedral - and arranged for them to be transported to Cowbridge.
Helen explains “when I contacted Sheffield Cathedral, they were on the verge of disposing them. I took a gamble not knowing if they were useable or not and got them transported to the Holy Cross. They were in a sorry state! The wings were tattered and torn and the bodies spoilt by mould and general decline. Members of the church and local people of Cowbridge rallied together to restore them and now they are back ‘in their full glory."
And local Cowbridge community groups have also joined in the spirit and been busy crafting their own angel to accompany the larger-than-life angels to make an amazing display in the Holy Cross.
Reverend Duncan Ballard, Ministry Area Leader, said ‘When I suggested angels for a display this year, I never expected this marvelous display!
The people of Cowbridge have really pulled out all the stops. If you have a few spare minutes at the incredibly busy time of year, why not pop into church and enjoy the beauty and tranquility as the angels bring you their message of hope and love to everyone in the community.’
If you would like to come and meet the angels, the display is free of charge and open until 6 January 2025.
