Feasting and Fasting as Lent Begins
Churches across the Diocese have been gathering to mark Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, beginning the sacred journey of Lent with a spirit of community, reflection, and mutual support.
Shrove Tuesday was alive with energy as ministry areas hosted events that brought people of all ages together.
In the De Morgannwg Ministry Area, St John’s Church in Sully, enjoyed a fabulous evening of pancakes and a lively Beetle Drive. Rev Denise and her team cooked up a storm, keeping a steady flow of pancakes and toppings coming throughout the night. Leigh and Carol led the Beetle Drive and pancake‑flipping competition with great enthusiasm. Rev Denise triumphed in the clergy league, while E from Rhoose took home the overall pancake‑flipping trophy.
At Llandaff Cathedral, Dean Jason was in full spirit for the Cathedral’s annual Pancake Party, welcoming families and visitors into a warm, festive atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the smell of freshly made pancakes filled the church hall at St David's Church, Pencoed in Pedair Afon Ministry Area. Their wonderful chefs estimate that just over 85 pancakes were cooked and enjoyed!
The journey ahead is one we undertake together, trusting in God’s presence and in the strength found in community. As Scripture reminds us in Galatians 6:2: “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.”
And as we begin Lent, the words of Joel 2:12 echo across our churches: “Return to me with all your heart.”

With shared purpose and shared faith, we step into Lent united, encouraging one another, growing together, and preparing our hearts for the hope of Easter.
