Lottery Funding Secured For Community Garden
St Peter's Community Project in Fairwater, Cardiff, has been awarded over £90,000 from the National Lottery 'People and Places' Fund for a new project to promote health and well being.
Over the years this grassroots project has attracted funds to rebuild the hall next to St Peter's Church providing an accessible modern venue for the community.
The gardens around St Peter's Church were developed by volunteers from a wasteland of dumped rubbish into a thriving oasis for nature in the heart of the community.
The garden was developed and is maintained by many diverse groups of volunteers.
The project was started by a visionary member of St Peter's Church, Ian Thompson, and has gone from strength to strength.
The Lottery funds have been awarded to start new therapeutic gardening activities for local children, including those with additional needs, training for adults to grow fruit and vegetables at home, and new activities for health and well-being for the wider community.
Jacquie Turnbull, a member of St Peter's Community Garden and Hall Project Management Committee, said “This is fantastic news for our community and St Peter's.
"The award of £96,924 will fund our project for the next three years. The activities in the Community Hall and Garden are managed by three part time staff and a band of hard working volunteers.
"They are all passionate about their work and the grant will enable us to continue for another three years."
