Process to Find the Next Bishop of Llandaff Begins
The careful and prayerful process to discern who should be the next Bishop of Llandaff is underway. The task falls to an Electoral College, representing all the Welsh dioceses, almost certainly to be held in January 2023. There are 12 electors from the Llandaff Diocese (6 lay people and 6 clergy) who have been chosen by a ballot of the lay and clergy members of the Diocesan Conference.
The first task for the Llandaff electors is to put together a profile, detailing the needs of our diocese and the gifts that we seek to discern in our new Bishop. It is vital that this profile is explicit in reflecting the priorities of our diocese as we enter the next phase of our mission, alongside the particular gifts and qualities of leadership, experience and spirituality that will shape the new Bishop’s work amongst us. The electors have identified 3 core questions that will be posed to our diocese and the wider Church, along with a more general invitation to add other comments that may help to form this initial part of the process.
The electors want to consult widely about the profile, across the Llandaff Diocese and beyond, and every response will be considered. Ministry Area Leaders and Lay Chairs will receive a communication in the coming days, asking them to seek a wide range of views within their Ministry Area, and to reflect these views to the electors.
The timescale is tight, and this initial work needs to be completed quickly, because the electors wish to digest the responses and produce a profile that can be circulated to our diocese, our province and the wider Anglican Communion before the end of November.
find out how you can contribute your views
Please look out for news of this consultation in your local church and Ministry Area in the coming days, and speak to your Ministry Area Leader, Lay Chair or local clergy to find out how you can contribute your views, if they do not contact you directly, or make known how you can respond.
Please hold this process of appointing our new Bishop in your heart, your mind and, above all, in your prayers. We are seeking the direction of God’s Holy Spirit to guide the Llandaff electors and the whole Electoral College, to discern the right person to lead our Diocese into our next phase of work and witness in Jesus’ name.
We encourage the people of the Llandaff Diocese to regularly include the election of our new Bishop in our private and corporate intercessions, offering these prayers...
Eternal Father,
whose Son is our Shepherd
and whose Holy Spirit is our Guide,
in your mercy bring to the diocese of Llandaff as our Bishop
a shepherd after your own heart who will walk in your ways,
and with loving care watch over your people.
Grant us a leader of vision and a teacher of your truth,
so that your Church here may be built up and your name glorified.
We pray also for your guidance on the members of the Electoral College,
and all involved in the process of the new Bishop’s election.
These things we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Living God,
You call us to share your life
and to share Your love,
as shown us through Jesus your Son.
At this time of transition for our diocese
we pray for the guidance of your Holy Spirit,
for all who will bear the responsibility
of electing a new bishop.
Through prayer,
and a trusting heart in Your purposes for Your Church
may they recognise the person that you call to be our next bishop,
as we continue to tell a joyful story,
to grow your kingdom,
and to build our capacity for good.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
