Llandaff Diocese Mothers Union have been involved with the AFIA – Away From It All – project for over 30 years and owns a large static caravan at Trecco Bay, Porthcawl. The project supports families who have experienced adversity and do not have the opportunity of a holiday. Families experience healing in their relationships by spending this quality time together away from their stressful situations at home, engage in activities together and have fun with the Park Dean resort providing families with entertainment passes. It is funded entirely by the generous fundraising events and donations from Mothers Union members and friends. This year the caravan is open from Eastertide through to the end of October with around 32 families receiving a holiday. MU members also provide a selection of puzzles, books and games which are put in a hand made bag for each child in the family, along with a knitted teddy which they take home and love to remind them of their holiday with us.Last year Llandaff Diocese MU purchased a new caravan and this was dedicated by The Right Reverend Richard Fenwick, former Bishop of St Helena and assisted by Rev Canon Philip Masson retired Rector of Porthcawl. It is very spacious, light and fully equipped.Every year, the project hold an Open Week where members and clergy are invited to visit the caravan and see at first hand the kind of experiences our families have. The Chapel is also open during the Open Week and the MU Marketing Unit welcomes members and friends where there is an opportunity for quiet prayer, some fellowship and a chance to buy some MU literature. This year our chaplain Revd Sandra Birdsall held an impromptu service of thanksgiving in the Chapel, with hymns and prayers.Do you know of a family who would benefit from a week’s holiday?Families are nominated for a holiday by various agencies – e.g., social services, Barnardo’s, Christians against Poverty, Clergy, Doctors and individuals. If you know of any family in need of a Break Away, please look at our website, where more information and forms are available – www.mothersunionllandaff.org
